COURSE SUMMARY OF OCEANOGRAPHY BACHELOR PROGRAMME

1. PHI1004: FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF MARXISM-LENINISM 1

Introduces students to philosophical perspectives and methodologies through examining dialectical and historical materialisms: Presents the Marxist-Leninist philosophy of nature, society and humanity, general principles of motion, natural development, society and human’s thought. Discusses the Marxist-Leninist philosophy’s reasoning of socioeconomic forms, classes, class conflicts, ethnic groups, revolutions, and the roles of people and caudillos in the history.

2. PHI1005: FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF MARXISM-LENINISM 2

Introduces the basic principles of Marxism-Leninism on capitalist mode of production through examining 3 economics theories: Theory of value, theory of surplus value, and theory of state monopoly capitalism. These theories highlight the economic principles governing the dynamics of market economy and capitalist mode of production. Clarifies the basics, formation, and main topics of Marxian theory of the Communism.

3. POL1001: HO CHI MINH IDEOLOGY

Familiarizes students with:

  • Foundation, formation and development of Ho Chi Minh ideology

Comprehensive opinions on basic problems of Vietnam’s Revolution, including ethnicity and the Revolution of national liberation, Communism and the road to Communism, Communist Party, Great Unity and International Unity, and Democratic.

  • The role and contributions of Ho Chi Minh to the Revolution of Vietnam

4. HIS1002: THE REVOLUTIONARY LINE OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF VIETNAM

Presents the historical context and formation of Vietnam Communist Party. Introduces a system approach to study the revolutionary strategies of the Party, including opinions, policies, missions, and solutions of the Vietnam’s Revolution with emphasis on the Party’s policies on important aspects of Vietnamese society during the renovation period.

5. INT1003: INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATICS 1

Familiarizes students to the fundamentals of information technology. The course includes 2 sections: Section 1 provides the fundamentals of informatics, computers, software and applications of information technology. Section 2 develops skills to control operating systems, use popular office software and utilize internet services.

6. INT1005: INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATICS 3

Introduction to high-level language programming with an emphasis on solving scientific computing problems. Discusses algorithms, high-level languages, structures, data types, functions, variables, I/O. Instruction and practice in specific programming languages (C/FORTRAN) provided. Students will develop FORTRAN applications in both Windows and Unix environments.

7. FLF2101: GENERAL ENGLISH 1

This course is the first term of a three-term sequence. Provides the fundamentals of English grammar for beginners (verb, tense, questions, etc), everyday use vocabulary, phonetic (consonant and vowel sounds), and pronunciation. Provides instruction and practice in reading, listening, speaking, and writing at the introductory level.

8. FLF2102: GENERAL ENGLISH 2

This course is the second term of a three-term sequence. Provides the fundamentals of English grammar for intermediates (present simple, present continuous, present perfect, past simple, past continuous, past perfect, model verbs), everyday use vocabulary, word forms (adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, phrasal verbs), phonetic, and pronunciation. Provides instruction and practice in reading, listening, speaking, and writing at the lower-intermediate level.

9. FLF2103: GENERAL ENGLISH 3

Provides the fundamentals of:

  • Advanced English grammar (word usages, grammar, dialogue writing, scientific writing)
  • Vocabulary for specialized English
  • Presentation skills

Reading, listening, speaking, and writing at intermediate level

13. HIS1056: FUNDAMENTALS OF VIETNAMESE CULTURE

Provides the essential concepts of Vietnamese culture: culture, civilization, philology, and material culture. Covers problems concerning forms, models, structures, and functions of the culture. Provides general knowledge to explain the cultural aspects of Vietnam: relationship among human society, natural environment, and culture; common characteristics of cultural exchanges in Vietnam and among Vietnam, China, India, and Western countries.

Introduces the basic elements of Vietnamese culture such as languages, religions (Confucianism, Buddism, Taoism), faiths (Fertility, Hoàng Thành, Đạo Mẫu), festivals and the history of Vietnamese culture (Prehistoric and Protohistoric Eras, Common Era, “Tự chủ” or Self-control Era). Emphasizes the glimpse of Vietnamese culture space for recognizing and developing modern Vietnamese culture.

14. GEO1050: EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCES

Provides a basic introduction to the Earth System, including dynamics processes, differentiation characteristics, the origin and evolution of the Earth, emergence of life, and human impacts on the Earth system. Students will learn about the operation of the whole Earth, including the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and geosphere. The course is especially concerned with the interactions between these different spheres and their impacts on Earth’s ecosystems. Discusses the evolution of life on the Earth, natural disasters, climate change, and adaptation measures.

15. MAT1090: LINEAR ALGEBRA

Topics covered include the basic understanding of sets, maps, rings, fields; real and complex numbers. Provides the fundamentals of polynomials, factorization of polynomials. The basics and techniques of matrices, matrix order, determinant, systems of linear equations, linear solvers commonly used in applied science and engineering will be presented. The course also introduces vector and Euclidean spaces. Discusses the properties of linear mapping, orthogonal transformation, bilinear and quadratic forms. Techniques of quadric lines and quadric surfaces will be addressed in the analytic geometry section.

16. MAT1091: CALCULUS 1

Covers topics on derivatives, single variable differential calculus, high order derivatives, Taylor and Maclaurin expansions, L'Hôpital's rule. Discusses basic techniques of antiderivatives, definite integral, improper integral type 1 and 2. Presents series, infinitive series, alternating series, power series, Fourier series.

17. MAT1092: CALCULUS 2

Second course in calculus. The course introduces multivariable calculus, limits and continuity, differentiable functions, local maxima and minima. Discusses techniques of multiple integral for computing of volume, surface, center of mass. Provides the basic concepts of line and surface integrals. Techniques for first and second order differential equations.

18. MAT1101: STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

This course includes 2 main sections: Probability and Statistics. The Probability section provides the basic concepts of sample space, events, probability of an event, random variables, probability distributions. The Statistics section covers sampling, confidence interval, hypothesis testing, linear regression.

19. PHY1100: MECHANICS-THERMODYNAMICS

The Mechanics section includes kinematics, Newton's Laws, Galilean invariance, conservation law, law of universal gravitation and planetary motion, the motion of rigid bodies (rotational and translational), oscillation and wave, Einstein’s special relativity. The Thermodynamics section covers the laws of thermodynamics, temperature, pressure, kinetic theory of heat and energy transfer.

20. PHY1103: ELECTRICS-OPTICS

Elec & Mag section introduces the fundamentals of (i) electromagnetism: electric fields, electric potential, current, Ohm’s law, Joule-Lenz law; and (ii) magnetism: magnetic forces, magnetic fields, Lorentz force, Biot-Savart law, Faraday’s law, electromagnetic oscillation and waves. Presents the interactions among electric charges, electromagnetic energy transformation, and phenomena in electrical engineering.

Optics section presents the (i) wave properties of light: interference, diffraction, polarization and (ii) the quantum properties of light: thermal radiation, photoelectric effect, Compton scattering. Discusses laws of thermal radiation, Planck’s quantum theory, Einstein’s photon theory of light.

21. CHE1080: GENERAL CHEMISTRY

This course offers an introduction to structural chemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry at undergraduate level with an emphasis on principles governing atomic structure and bonding; chemical kinetics; reduction–oxidation reaction and  electrochemistry; chemistry of compound; chemistry of organic substances and concepts of biological chemistry.

22. CHE1069: GENERAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY

This course offers chemical practicum in lab.

23. HMO2201: CALCULATION METHODS

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Numerical errors
  • Numerical methods for nonlinear systems. Determining the maxima and minima of multivariable functions
  • Numerical methods for systems of linear equations, determinant, invert matrices, stability
  • Interpolation and least squares methods
  • Numerical evaluation of derivatives and integrals
  • Approximated solutions for ordinary differential equations
  • Finite Difference Method for partial differential equations
  • Problem sets require some knowledge of MATLAB (C/C++ or Mathematica)

24. HMO2202: FLUID MECHANICS

This class provides students with an introduction to principal concepts and methods of fluid mechanics. Topics covered in the course include the properties of fluids; concepts of flow; motion of fluids, mass conservation; momentum and energy equations for continua.

25. HMO2203: GIS AND REMOTE SENSING

Presents the fundamentals of geographic information systems. Introduces GIS software packages and mapping. Students will learn the basic skills in digital mapping with an emphasis on real applications. Investigates the fundamentals of remote sensing. Introduces software packages for satellite image processing. Introduces systems for satellite data acquisition, processing, and analysis.
